Frequently asked questions

Questions worth
answering honestly.

The questions here are the ones people actually ask — before they sign up, before they commit, and sometimes before they’re even sure what they’re looking for. If yours isn’t here, email Alan directly.

For individuals

You’re curious.
Here’s what people ask first.

What is HeartMath?+

HeartMath is a body of research and a set of practical tools — developed over 30 years at the HeartMath Institute in California — focused on the relationship between the heart, the nervous system, and emotional self-regulation. The core insight is that the heart communicates with the brain in ways that directly shape how we think, feel, and respond under pressure. The tools are designed to help you work with that relationship deliberately — building coherence, reducing reactivity, and developing a more stable internal state over time.

It’s science-based and measurable, but the experience of it is straightforward: most people simply notice they feel better, respond more clearly, and recover more quickly.

Where do I start?+

The 14-Day Reset is the simplest starting point — a gentle, guided 14-day programme, one short video each morning, that gives your nervous system some breathing space through daily practice. No prior knowledge needed.

If you’d prefer to dive straight into the HeartMath tools, the Inner Balance sensor lets you begin working with the core HeartMath techniques immediately — with real-time feedback from day one.

How much time does this actually take?+

Less than you might expect. The 14-Day Reset is under five minutes a day. The Inner Balance sensor works well with consistent 5-minute daily sessions. HeartMind Leadership is also under five minutes of video content per day, self-paced. The Coach/Mentor programme is the most involved — structured over six weeks, fitting around a working life.

Five focused minutes every day is more valuable than an hour once a week. That’s not a motivational line — it’s how your physiology works.

I’ve tried meditation and mindfulness before and they didn’t stick. Is this different?+

It tends to be, yes — in a specific way. The practices here work with your physiology directly, not just your attention or your thinking. And because you can measure what’s shifting with an Inner Balance sensor, practice feels more real and worth returning to. There’s less room for the doubt that usually derails a new habit.

Do I need to buy any technology to get started?+

No. The 14-Day Reset and the Coach/Mentor programme require no equipment. The Inner Balance sensor is a useful companion once you’re deeper into the work, giving real-time feedback that accelerates what you’re building. But it’s never a requirement to begin.

Is this therapy?+

No. HeartMath is about building your capacity to emotionally self-regulate — moment to moment, as those moments unfold — so that you feel more in alignment with who you actually are. It’s practical, physiological, and grounded in science.

Coaching is not therapy, and the work here is not a substitute for professional mental health support. If you’re currently working with a therapist or counsellor, these approaches complement that work well.

For certified HeartMath coaches

You’ve done the training.
Here’s what comes next.

I’ve completed certification but I’m struggling to build a practice. Where do I start?+

Getting Clear is designed for exactly this. It’s not more HeartMath training — it’s the identity, positioning and business-building work that certification doesn’t cover. It helps you find your own voice, your specific audience, and a way of talking about your work that’s authentically yours rather than borrowed from the methodology.

I already have an established practice. Is there support available beyond the initial training?+

Yes. Alan offers ongoing mentoring to certified coaches — not just for business development, but as a form of professional supervision. He’s worked one-on-one with over a thousand coaches since 2012. The support is tailored to what you actually need, whether that’s case reflection, practice refinement, or simply a thinking partner who understands the work from the inside. Reach out to Alan directly to discuss what would be most useful.

Can I be listed in the coach directory?+

The directory lists coaches who are actively practising and have a full profile. If you have an active practice, reach out to Alan about being included. Completing Getting Clear is not a prerequisite — though it’s the recommended path for coaches who want to build or strengthen their practice before stepping into a more visible role.

I want to use HeartMath with groups or in organisations. Is that possible?+

Your Coach/Mentor licence covers one-on-one and small group coaching of up to 6 people. For group work in organisational settings, that’s the appropriate context. Anything beyond 6 people requires written permission from Alan — get in touch if that situation arises.

I’m not sure my licence is current. Who do I contact?+

Alan directly. He manages all licence renewals. Email him and he’ll sort it out.

For organisations & leaders

You’re thinking about
your people.

What is HeartMind Leadership and who is it for?+

HeartMind Leadership is Alan’s own programme for anyone in a leadership role — or growing into one — who wants to lead from a more grounded, coherent place. It’s personal development work that happens to be deeply relevant to the demands of leadership — beginning with your own humanity, not with skills or competencies.

It’s designed for individuals. Any single person — whether they lead a team of two or an organisation of two hundred — can do this work on their own. Organisations wanting to invest in their leaders at scale are welcome to purchase multiple seats.

What makes this different from other leadership development programmes?+

Most leadership development focuses on skills and behaviour. HeartMind Leadership begins with the person — specifically, the capacity to remain coherent under pressure, to lead with presence rather than reactivity, and to work honestly with the imperfections of being human in a role that often doesn’t allow for them. The science is sound. The approach is human.

Our organisation is interested in HeartMath for our team. Where do we start?+

A conversation with Alan is the right first step. There are three ways we work with organisations.

The first is group coaching — small groups of up to 6 people, facilitated by a certified coach, focused on the specific challenges the group is navigating together.

The second is corporate training — information-led sessions on topics like stress management, emotional self-regulation and building resilience, designed for larger mixed audiences.

The third is HeartMind Leadership — a self-paced individual programme for leaders who want to develop themselves from the inside out. Email Alan directly to start the conversation.

Does our team need any prior knowledge of HeartMath?+

None at all. Whether it’s a group coaching engagement or a corporate training session, programmes are designed to meet people where they are. Prior experience with HeartMath is welcome but never assumed.

Is there evidence that this works?+

Yes. HeartMath research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, validating measurable improvements in stress levels, emotional regulation, heart rate variability and cognitive performance. For a full library of research and case studies, visit heartmath.org.

What the research confirms is what practitioners report: these aren’t techniques that require belief to work. They’re physiological — and the results are measurable.
